Concept - Historic Redevelopment

#21007 (Covington, GA)

The Conyers Street Gym with its stone foundation, classic red brick main body, cast concrete accents and modest terra cotta insets, is a well-preserved example of the Tapestry Brick style. Tapestry Brick is characterized by elevations which feature decorative brick patterns, and ornamented by cast stone, concrete or stucco accents which contrast markedly with the brick. In most cases Tapestry Brick was used as a budget conscious and modest architectural expression, though some exhibit more exuberant ornamentation, such as projecting and recessed courses or planes of brick and elaborate rowlock details.  This proposed redevelopment was an effort with private and public investment to repurpose the gym and create a new matching building… all with market rate apartments, and all the while saving history and telling its stories.  Sadly, it did not move forward.
